As the Olympic flame was lit in the beautiful Maracanã stadium on Saturday August 6, CMA CGM, a leading worldwide shipping Group, has been transporting equipment for the Olympic Games since December, 2015.

An expert at transporting a wide variety of cargo, from perishable goods in refrigerated containers, to vegetables, luxury yachts, pharmaceutical products and industrial equipment, the group contributed to this historic event by transporting equipment and installations to Rio, a reflection of the economic influence of this exceptional event.

CMA CGM carried more than 1,400 containers loaded with 17,000 tons of goods for the Olympic village, which is hosting 10,500 athletes from 206 participating nations.

The first containers were loaded in December, 2015 from Asia and Europe, and last containers reached Rio in June, 2016.

CMA CGM also transported safety barriers for the track cycling event.

Among them, more than 200 containers were loaded from the French ports of Fos sur Mer and le Havre. In China, most of the containers were loaded in Shanghai, Nansha and Yantan.

CMA CGM also transported security barriers for the cycle race.

Despite some controversy as to whether Rio has the capability to host the Olympics, the games begun on August 5, 2016 and are set to finish on August 21.

The US currently has the most gold medals, with a total of 27, followed by the UK (16) and China (15).
