COSCO SHIPPING concludes first methanol refueling mission

COSCO’s CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu has conducted refuelling for the new methanol dual-fuel powered 1300 TEU containership ‘NCL VESTLAND’ with 79.5 tonnes of methanol at Sanfu Shipbuilding in Taizhou.

The bunkering operation represents the company’s first marine methanol fuel supply onshore.

The mobile methanol filling skid, jointly developed by CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu and COSCO (Lianyungang) Liquid Loading & Unloading Equipment Co., Ltd, was employed for this refuelling task.

The entire vehicle-to-ship methanol filling operation was completed in 2.5 hours.

To ensure the smooth execution of this refuelling task, CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu conducted numerous coordination meetings on the methanol fuel refuelling process, safety assurance plans, and emergency response strategies. A detailed methanol refuelling operation guide was also compiled.

The mobile methanol-filling skid uses the pump as its power source to facilitate simultaneous unloading and refuelling tasks.

This skid includes several key functional modules, each of which is highly integrated. This integration reportedly ensures a safe and efficient process for transferring methanol fuel from tankers to a vessel’s fuel bunker, while also enabling seamless operation and intelligent management.

The mobile methanol filling skid offers flexibility, requires a low initial investment, and boasts a rapid bunkering rate of 180 cubic metres per hour, according to COSCO SHIPPING.

Earlier this week, COSCO SHIPPING Energy signed a contract with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading to construct six 307,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) crude oil tankers.
