COSCO SHIPPING names two new vessels

COSCO SHIPPING has held a naming ceremony in Changxing Island, Shanghai, for two vessels part of Qatar Energy’s LNG transportation project.

The vessels were named Rex Tillerson and Umm Ghuwailina.

The building contract for seven 174,000-cubic-metre LNG carriers was jointly won by COSCO SHIPPING LNG Investment (Shanghai), a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Energy, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) in 2022.

The vessels were constructed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. and will be utilised for the Northern Gas Field Expansion Project (NFXP) developed by Qatar Energy.

These 299-metre vessels, with a 46.4-metre beam and 26.25-metre depth, are designed to meet Qatar Energy’s strict standards for its LNG fleet.

Featuring advanced double stern fin lines and low-carbon, digital technologies, they reportedly offer rapid performance, reduced emissions, high automation, and increased cargo capacity.

These first two ships represent the fifth generation of the 174,000-cubic-metre “Changheng series” LNG carriers developed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group and will soon join NFXP’s newbuilding fleet.

Just recently, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry and COSCO SHIPPING Container Lines signed a contract in Shanghai for the construction of 12 14,000 TEU containerships with dual-fuel methanol propulsion.
