A new video tells the Port of Antwerp’s story from its 12th century beginnings until today, and demonstrates the breadth of its ambitions to become a smart port.
The Port of Antwerp enjoyed its first period of expansive growth in the 15th century, nicknamed the ‘Golden Century’ for the boom in trade.
Thereafter, it grew continually, building an ever greater number of ports until eventually it was one of the biggest ports in the world and a key gateway to and from the rest of Europe.

Today, the port is striving to increase connectivity and boost trade. It is doing this by researching smart technologies that will help “explore the new oceans of data” and create a community that is ready for the next century of trade.

The port formally announced its intentions to become a smart port at the ‘Supernova Festival of the Future’, during which it unveiled several of its latest innovative projects.
These included self-driving and self-steering vessels and a port-wide ‘digital nervous system’ that connects machines, buildings, ships, the environment and people, as well as a fully autonomous sounding boat that uses unique, cloud technology.
