South Korean shipping company HMM has revealed it is operating its own IoT system for reefer containers with sensitive cargoes.

By utilising the internet access, HMM is able to track a containers location in real-time and monitor and controls its current status, such as temperature, humidity, CO2, vibration, etc.

This is proved to be especially useful with cargo such as frozen foods.

“Deploying new IT technology to the shipping industry has become necessary to improve each company’s service quality. HMM will strengthen its position as an ‘IT frontier’ in the industry by applying advanced industrial technologies in advance,” HMM continued in its social media post.

HMM has previously announced that is signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to develop smart ship technology. Announced in September 2020, the MoU sees both parties collaborate in research, development, and innovation in the field of smart ship solutions.
