Hutchison Ports BEST has added two new Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes and two shuttle carriers to its handling fleet as part of the terminal’s expansion efforts.
President of the Port of Barcelona, Mercè Conesa Pagès, said, “The new machinery represents a great step forward in environmental sustainability, one of our strategic axes, since the cranes have an innovative system that allows the reuse of energy generated during operations.
“Nine years ago, Hutchison Ports BEST received its 1st cranes to start operating at this terminal. Today, it has become one of the best performing semi-automated terminals not only in Europe, but in the world.”
The cranes are currently being commissioned and are expected to be operational within the next few weeks.
BEST now has a total of 13 quay cranes capable of operating the world’s largest container ships of more than 23,000 TEU capacity, and can operate up to three vessels of this size simultaneously.
