Iraq obtains 5 berths at major ports

The Iraqi government has received five berths of Al-Faw Grand Port in southern Basra province from the South Korean company Daewoo in charge of the project.

The Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani presided over the handover ceremony of the five berths, according to a statement from al-Sudani’s media office.

al-Sudani said: “The project will transform Iraq from a country dependent on the ports of others to a maritime state, has effectively entered the global trade and transport routes that pass through the Middle East.”

According to the statement, the country’s Development Road Project, which originates at Al-Faw Grand Port, would serve as a regional economic integration centre.

In May 2023, the Iraqi government announced the Development Road Project, a large infrastructure project aimed at connecting southern Iraq to the country’s border with Turkey and eventually reaching into European rail and road networks.

In July, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced that Iraq is embracing the move to digitalise its maritime sector, with plans to establish a Maritime Single Window for the major ports of Um Qasr (North and South)
