JERA, NYK conducts first truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering

JERA Co., Inc. (JERA) has accomplished the world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia to an ammonia-fueled tugboat (A-Tug) operated by NYK Line.

According to JERA, the project is set to be finished in late August 2024.

The bunkering of fuel ammonia took place on 17 July at Yokohama Port’s Honmoku Pier, with the participation of the Yokohama City Port and Harbour Bureau, and was carried out in accordance with the fuel supply agreement signed by JERA and NYK on 27 May 2024.

Resonac Corporation (Resonac) created the bunkered fuel ammonia at its Kawasaki Plant, in part utilising waste plastic as a raw material, and the same fuel ammonia will be utilised in the A-Tug’s sea testing.

After the A-Tug is built, JERA will provide fuel ammonia to its operator, Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation.

JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050 aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions from domestic and international commercial activities by 2050. This includes developing hydrogen and ammonia supply networks.

In December 2023, JERA and PT Pertamina announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on a business opportunity.
