Lloyd’s Register (LR) has appointed Jim Smith as its new Strategic Business Partner and Senior Representative for LR in Japan.
In his new capacity, Smith will use his significant experience and knowledge to help LR and its clients achieve mutual growth and economic success.
He will also represent LR externally in Japan, working directly with customers to create personalised solutions that match their business requirements.
Smith’s appointment is supplemented by the continued support of Hiromitsu Kikuchi, who has been designated Deputy Senior Representative.
Kikuchi-san will prioritise building commercial ties in Japan, particularly with shipyards, shipowners, managers, and equipment manufacturers.

Regarding his new role, Jim Smith said: “I am excited to bring a globally experienced senior presence to Japan, connecting LR customers with our extensive network of capabilities and expertise. Collaborating with Kikuchi-san, we aim to provide bespoke LR expertise to our valued Japanese clients.”

Smith’s tenure with LR covers nearly three decades, commencing in 1995. For over 20 years, he has held different technical and management jobs throughout multiple nations in Asia, including Japan. From 2015 to 2018, he was Regional Director for North Asia.
He most recently served as Global Classification Manager from 2018 to 2023, and In-Service Product Manager from 2023 to 2024.
