Maersk unveils first own-licensed bonded warehouse in north Vietnam

A.P. Moller–Maersk (Maersk) has opened its first bonded warehouse in Vietnam at SLP Park, Nam Dinh Vu IP, Hai Phong province.

The opening ceremony was attended by Lasse Pedersen Hjortshøj, the Commercial Counsellor of the Danish Embassy in Vietnam.

Maersk’s bonded warehouse is strategically located in the Hai Phong seaport area, along the main logistics axis of the Northern region, making it a pivotal logistics hub in North Vietnam’s international transportation network.

It connects with Maersk’s current fulfilment centre in Hai Phong and the upcoming terminal at Lach Huyen Port, which is being developed through a strategic partnership between APM Terminals and Hateco.

The warehouse is equipped with technology that ensures the efficiency and safety of operations. The interior of the warehouse is standardised with a modern racking system, sorting processes, inventory control, and an automatic barcode system with high accuracy.

Additionally, the new facility prioritises minimising electricity and energy consumption. This includes using spot-shaped skylight panels to maximise natural light, energy-saving LEDs, and installing motion and occupancy sensors in office and public areas.

As the first customer for this new facility, Amazon Vietnam, a cross-border e-commerce service provider, will start its operations in October.

Maersk Contract Logistics will provide bonded warehouse services, domestic fulfilment, customs procedures, and in-land transportation services.

“Maersk always aims to bring the most optimal logistics solutions to our customers. We believe that running our own bonded warehouse directly helps us to synchronise processes for our clients,” said Kevin Burrell, Area Managing Director of Maersk Mekong (Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar).

“It also improves service quality and cost controls. We sincerely thank Amazon for choosing Maersk as a long-term partner in Vietnam and look forward to achieving greater success together.”

“Over the past 3 years, Maersk has embodied the principles of customer obsession and operational excellence, driving remarkable progress for our business. We look forward to the future milestones this facility will enable as we further strengthen our partnership.”

Maersk recently disclosed quarterly results, showing enhanced profitability across its Ocean, Logistics & Services, and Terminals segments over the past year; Ocean’s profitability in Q3 2024 improved with better freight rates and strong volume growth, resulting in a 41 per cent revenue rise.
