The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Directorate General of Sea Transportation (DGST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Both parties have agreed to extend the co-operation on human resources development of the government offices in the maritime field for another three years.

The Ministry of Transportation and the Republic of Indonesia were also involved in the agreement.

This extension marks 17 years of cooperation between the MPA and the DGST.

Over this period, almost 100 programmes and workshops have been organised for around 1,600 officials.

The focus areas of these workshops include the implementation of conventions under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which contribute to the enhancement of navigational safety and marine environmental protection, as well as maritime leadership development.

“This MoU is testament to the close maritime ties between Indonesia and Singapore. The strong commitment by the DGST and the MPA to facilitate greater exchange of knowledge and best practices will continue to raise the technical capability of our officers,” said Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of the MPA.

Arif Toha, Acting Director General of Sea Transportation for the DGST, added: “This MoU aims to improve the technical capability of the officers of the two organisations. It facilitates more frequent exchanges and greater cross-learning between the maritime agencies of Indonesia and Singapore.”

The MPA previously held an inaugural sector-wide maritime cybersecurity exercise which tested the sector’s coordination cybersecurity incident management, emergency plans and crisis communication.

This exercise involved around 90 participants from the organisation, as well as PSA Corporation Ltd (PSA), Jurong Port Pte Ltd (JP), and Pacific International Lines (PIL).
