MCI reveals Star Cool 1.1 triple refrigerant reefer cooling machine

Maersk Container Industry (MCI) has introduced a new reefer technology, Star Cool 1.1, as part of its efforts to support more sustainable global cold chains.

This new technology reportedly incorporates features designed to reduce environmental impact while meeting modern needs.

The Star Cool 1.1 incorporates the climate-friendly refrigerant R1234yf, which offers an ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP).

According to MCI, this initiative is the first of its kind in the industry, offering the Star Cool 1.1 as a solution that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerants while maintaining energy efficiency.

The unit also features enhanced energy efficiency, consuming 8 per cent less energy than previous models through advancements in compressor technology and design optimisation.

The Star Cool 1.1 compressor technology builds on the established principles of previous models, offering improved temperature control and better cargo care.

The system includes an energy metre that records usage and wirelessly transmits data via the Sekstant solution, providing operators with detailed information on energy consumption and carbon footprint for specific voyages or time frames.

Star Cool 1.1 is designed to adapt to changing global refrigerant regulations and environmental standards, supporting both sustainability and efficient operation.

“After completion of an extensive R&D and verification programme we are excited to offer our customers the first reefer solution that offers adaptability to 3 alternative refrigerants while operating with the highest energy efficiency in the market – thereby delivering a significant advancement in reducing the environmental impact from reefer container operation,” said Søren Leth Johannsen, CEO at MCI.

“The Star Cool 1.1 is a significant innovation in our quest to support the decarbonisation of the shipping industry,” said Paul Clarke, Head of Reefer Technology at Maersk.

“Its ability to operate efficiently across multiple refrigerant options not only highlights its flexibility but also its readiness to meet both current and future safety and environmental standards. We have thoroughly field-tested the upgraded Star Cool system and it is instrumental in our efforts to achieve lower energy consumption and reduced emissions, aligning with our long-term sustainability goals.

Last month, Maersk and the General Ports Authority of Saudi Arabia (MAWANI) announced the launch of the Middle East’s biggest Maersk Logistics Park at Jeddah Islamic Port.
