Mediterranean Crash in Pictures

The French Ministry of Defence has released photos of the crash between the CLS Virginia and the Tunisian Ro-Ro vessel Uylesses, which took place off the Cape of Corsica on October 7.

The collision prompted environmental concerns after it caused a four kilometre ribbon of fuel following a hull breach, which the Maritime Prefecture of the Mediterranean and the Channel responded to by imposing an anti-pollution dam.

A fleet of 12 ships from the French and Italian navies collaborated to reduce the detrimental effects to the environment. By October 14, more than 1,000 cubic meters of fuel had been picked up from sea.

The ships were seperated on October 12 and the Maritime Prefecture now says “anti-pollution aircraft no longer detect significant plaques of heavy fuel at seas”.
