MEDLOG begins construction on storage facility in Savannah

MEDLOG, the logistics division of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has officially broken ground on a new 291,000-square-foot cold storage facility in Savannah, Georgia.

MEDLOG’s Savannah cold storage facility will introduce around 20,000 freezer/cooler pallet positions to the local market and is designed to process up to three million pounds of blast freezing per day. This will enable producers to directly ship raw products to the cold storage facility for blast freezing and ultimately export to overseas markets in South America and Asia.

The facility has the capability to handle both frozen and chilled cargo. The facility will entail 42 loading docks and has been designed to serve rail cargo, giving producers as far away as the US Midwest access to global markets.

This latest MEDLOG investment in Georgia will greatly benefit the Port of Savannah, the third busiest container terminal in the US. This development represents a significant investment in the port’s future growth and is expected to bring over 100 new jobs to the city, reported MSC.

MEDLOG’s Savannah cold storage has been designed to ensure a reduced carbon footprint. The facility will feature a 1.5-Megawatt rooftop solar array capable of supplying approximately 10 per cent of the facility’s power.

It will also be the first cold storage facility in the US to achieve BREEAM certification, an international alternative to LEED. The MEDLOG cold storage facility aims to be operational around mid-2025.

Speaking on MSC’s latest investment in the US, MSC USA President & CEO Fabio Santucci stated: “This latest investment in the state of Georgia is another example for how MSC continues to expand the global reach of US exporters and importers by enhancing landside capacity.

“We’ve designed this cold storage facility with the necessary specifications to enable trade opportunities for businesses as far inland as the Midwest. MSC has been serving US businesses nationwide since 1985, and this facility allows us to further strengthen that decades-long partnership.

Earlier this year, MAWANI and MEDLOG have invested a value exceeding 150 million riyals ($40 million) to the integrated Logistics Park at Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port.

More recently, MSC announced that it has reached an agreement with premier technology startup NYSHEX.
