Meet our Host Partner for SDP North America: The Port of Halifax

PTI is pleased to present The Port of Halifax as our respected Host Partner for the forthcoming Smart Digital Ports of the Future (SDP) North America 2023. As we prepare for the event on the 5 and 6 December, let’s look at what makes the port unique as a cutting-edge marine gateway.

The Port of Halifax is Canada’s Ultra Atlantic Gateway, connecting to more than 150 countries. A deepwater international gateway port, Halifax, meet the needs of today’s shipping, cargo, and cruise operations, while building for the future.

Initiatives are underway to increase the flow of goods and people through the Port of Halifax, increase efficiency, reduce the overall carbon footprint, and identify future opportunities.

This year, the Port of Halifax and project partners were recognised at this year’s International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) Sustainability Awards in the “Digitalization” category. By integrating data from cargo handling and transport, operations, and other factors in an accurate and interoperable system, the Data Enhancement Framework 2 (DEF2) project builds an assessment of CO2e intensity associated with operations showing per container and per metric tonne amounts of carbon.

PSA Halifax, the operator of the containerised cargo terminals at the Port of Halifax, is purchasing eight new electric Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes (E-RTGs) for its Atlantic Hub terminal. This purchase will expand the terminal’s handling capacity by 25 per cent and is part of PSA’s ongoing efforts to electrify its equipment fleet, which will help the port meet its sustainability and decarbonisation objectives.

The new E-RTGs will replace the existing diesel fleet and will help to transform the Atlantic Hub terminal into an all-electric RTG operating environment. PSA Halifax recently added two brand new mega Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes to its Atlantic Hub terminal at the south end of the port.

These new ultra-large cranes are in addition to the five existing super-Post-Panamax cranes at the terminal, thus allowing PSA Halifax to handle the largest container vessels deployed along the North American East Coast today.

The port’s attention to innovation and collaboration has extended globally with the announcement of the first network of port innovation hubs, bringing together innovation hubs from the Port of Hamburg (homePORT), the Port of Halifax (The PIER) and the Port of Valencia (Opentop). This will drive the adoption of innovation in the global port system by connecting communities of innovation centres, including start-ups, entrepreneurs, companies, researchers, universities, and investors, to share groundbreaking ideas, project results, innovation experiences, methodologies, and best practices.

This year, the workforce development team at the Port of Halifax released its report on green skills for a net-zero economy. This is part of ongoing work to support the development of a capable and diverse workforce which also includes Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programmes, hackathons, workshops, and more.
