The next edition of GreenTech for Ports and Terminals is just around the corner, and we’re thrilled to spotlight some of the visionary speakers who will be sharing their expertise on the industry’s path to a greener, more sustainable future.
Today, we sit down with George Wagner, Chief ESG Officer at CoreX Holding BV, on how digital tools, electrification, and collaboration are driving decarbonisation.
Join us on 29 – 30 April 2025 in Gothenburg and be part of the conversation shaping the future of our industry!
What are the most significant innovations or strategies you see driving decarbonisation in ports and maritime logistics?
Some of the most impactful strategies driving decarbonisation in ports and maritime logistics include the use of digital tools to reduce energy consumption—both electricity and fuel—by minimising unnecessary container moves. Digital systems are also helping to cut ship fuel use by optimising speed and engine efficiency during transit.
Another major innovation is the development of digital platforms that coordinate shipping lanes, berth allocations, and arrival times to eliminate the need for ships to wait at anchor. In addition, government and international support are crucial for scaling up low-carbon fuel production and developing global bunkering infrastructure.
Finally, access to renewable electricity at ports is essential to support electrification efforts, including the provision of onshore power for berthed vessels.
How is your company supporting the transition to greener operations—whether through technology, infrastructure, or collaboration?
Technology is playing a key role, with nearly all vertical transport equipment now running on electricity, leaving only a few mobile harbour cranes still to be replaced. Efforts are also underway to shift horizontal transport equipment to electric power, with pilot projects in progress, and several terminals already using renewable fuels.
On the infrastructure side, collaboration with port and local authorities is essential to secure a renewable or carbon-free electricity supply and to ensure the provision of onshore power for vessels.
Why is it important for industry professionals to attend GreenTech Europe 2025, and what key takeaways can they expect from the event?
Attending GreenTech is important to stay updated on technological and regulatory changes affecting the industry. It provides an opportunity to validate strategies against industry benchmarks and learn from innovations in other ports.
Furthermore, it offers insights into novel, economically and environmentally sound approaches that can be implemented.
