As we gear up for our first-ever Maritime Safety Series: Ports Edition, we’ve had the privilege of speaking with some of our speakers about the critical importance of safety in maritime operations and why attending this event could be an invaluable step towards steering the industry toward a safer future for all.
In this interview, we’re excited to share insights from Yucel Yildiz, Ports and Terminals Manager at Rightship.
Why is safety a critical focus in the maritime industry today?
As the world economy grows, so do the shipping activities, which almost 90 per cent of the world trade relies on. We are in a digital era where customers and traders request flawless and fast shipments. Safety, apart from directly affecting front-line workers like seafarers, stevedores ensure a flawless supply chain for a successful business. An unfortunate incident in the maritime sector has an unimaginable butterfly effect on another part of the world instantly. In order to have a sustainable development of world trade and ensure a resilient supply chain for all parties involved, safety must be paramount and should not be compromised.
What inspired you to participate in the Maritime Safety Series event?
I believe the maritime sector from ship brokers to stevedores, from shipping companies to ports and terminals must work in synergy to ensure safe operations. A clock with only one broken gear among many perfect components will not show the correct time. All stakeholders in the maritime industry must collaborate to enhance safety and performance.
This event is a very good opportunity to share best practices and learn from each other.
What key message or insight do you hope to share with attendees?
The maritime industry is one of the most dynamic and complex industries. Combined with the digital advancements of the era, data has become a very valuable asset. I would like to stress the importance of embracing transparency, using mass data, and learning from all parties in the industry to enhance safety. It is a lot easier to get insights equal to “experience” by utilising the right data and tools.
