The ninth edition of the Container Terminal Automation Conference (CTAC) is just around the corner, and we are excited to highlight insights from our Bronze Sponsor, Ericsson, on the key automation trends and innovations that are shaping the future of container terminals.
As Europe’s leading event for container terminal operators, CTAC brings together more than 250 industry leaders each year for two days of invaluable discussion, innovation, and collaboration. Join us on 1–2 April 2025 at Las Arenas Balneario Resort in Valencia!
What key innovations or trends do you see shaping the future of container terminal automation?
The many benefits of automation are increasingly clear to terminal operators. They are realising that they can improve all aspects of container terminal operations; greater efficiency, lower costs, better monitoring, and increased safety. All of these support higher productivity, decarbonisation, safer operations, and those all-important stronger bottom lines.
Previous attempts at automation relied on technologies that can no longer handle the bandwidth, device density, and latency capabilities required by today’s advanced solutions across autonomous vehicles, equipment, and processes. One thing for sure is that terminal operators can no longer bridge the gap solely through legacy technologies like WiFi, Bluetooth, or physical cables. To forge the digitally connected ports of the future, a much more powerful, connectivity technology is needed—which is exactly what 5G offers to terminal operators, with the high performance, low latency, security and reliability achieved through private 5G networks.

How is your company contributing to the evolution of automation, equipment innovation, or operational optimisation in the industry?
Ericsson’s private 5G networks provide a secure, reliable foundation on which automation can be deployed at container terminals across yard vehicles, quay-side equipment, and truck gates. Our industry-leading cellular technologies also address mission-critical needs and fleet connectivity to keep human workers connected, productive, and safe.
Why should industry professionals attend CTAC Europe 2025, and what insights can they expect to gain?
While this is Ericsson’s first time at CTAC Europe, the shared insights, real-world learnings, and port collaborations found other CTAC and port technology events have been valuable in understanding on how our industry leaders are tackling major challenges in digitalisation and decarbonisation, while staying ahead of current safety and security concerns.
