ClassNK grants approval to Mitsui for methanol fuel supply system

Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has issued an approval in principle (AiP) for Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.’s methanol fuel delivery system.

ClassNK noted that methanol is regarded as one of the most promising alternative fuels for decarbonisation, and using green methanol, such as sustainable biomass-derived bio methanol and e-methanol synthesised from CO2 and renewable energy-derived hydrogen, is expected to result in a significant reduction in GHG emissions over its entire lifecycle.

On the other hand, methanol poses concerns in the event of a leak due to its toxicity to people and ease of fire, demanding suitable safety precautions.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has attempted to create safety regulations for the use of methanol as a fuel, and the ‘Interim Guideline for the Safety of Ships Using Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel, IMO Res. MSC.1/Circ.1621’ was published in 2020.

ClassNK has examined Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s conceptual design for the system, which is based on Part A of its ‘Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels’ and incorporates the IMO Interim Guidelines. ClassNK issued the AiP once they confirmed their compliance with the necessary conditions.

In March, ClassNK issued the ‘SCCS-Full’ 1 class notation to the Ever Top, a Neopanamax container vessel owned by Evergreen.
