Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced that it will launch the Fleet Optimal Control Unified System (FOCUS), a project to ensure safer, more environmentally friendly ocean transport.
According to a statement, the three companies have proceeded with this initiative to promote the use and application of information and communication technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data.
Working in partnership with Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co. and Weathernews Inc, MOL will use a cloud-based platform to gather and apply operation data from around 150 vessels.
The information collected by this platform will be leveraged to develop applications for advanced ship monitoring and propulsion performance analysis.

With the aid of user-friendly applications that facilitate greater communication between vessels and shore-based facilities, MOL expects FOCUS to enhance the safety of maritime operations.
Features of the system include Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), which realizes “visualization at sea” by transmitting audible and visual information about operational vessels to the shore side.
The company stated: “MOL takes a proactive stance in collaboration with companies and research institutes that transcends business categories, pursuing convenient, stress-free services for customers.”
