Japanese carrier Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL) has unveiled the first of three new smart tech-enabled liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers at a naming ceremony at Sakaide Shipyard.
The MARVEL EAGLE is equipped with high performance data gathering technology and will form an integral part of MOL’s Smart FOCUS initiative.
Smart FOCUS is a collaborative effort between MOL, Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding and Weathernews Inc, which will collect operation data from approximately 150 vessels on a cloud-based platform.
Its goal is to develop applications for advanced ship monitoring and propulsion performance analysis.

A statement from MOL said: “The Marvel Eagle is the first vessel equipped with the high-performance ship operation data collection device, which serves as the foundation of the FOCUS project that MOL recently announced and started putting into action.
“Detailed voyage and engine data on actual voyages will be collected from the vessel during operation and stored in a cloud-based data platform to develop applications.”
