MPA reports fire onboard tanker in East Johor Straits

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has received notification of an engine room fire aboard the Med Atlantic, a Malta-flagged tanker, in the East Johor Straits within Singapore waters.

The port authority was alerted at 10:30 a.m. on 21 October and has now confirmed that the vessel is currently anchored.

An MPA patrol craft, two Police Coast Guard craft, three Singapore Civil Defence Force marine firefighting and rescue vessels, and two tugboats have been dispatched to provide assistance and maintain navigational safety.

All 22 crew members have departed the vessel and are believed to be safe with no injuries.

There is no disruption of vessel movement in the region, and the MPA is providing navigational bulletins to warn passing vessels to avoid the incident area.

The Singapore Food Agency is closely monitoring the situation and has recommended that fish farms in the area take appropriate precautions.

In September, the Port of Long Beach announced that Ocean Boulevard and the Vincent Thomas Bridge are now accessible to traffic, after the removal of the truck and cargo involved in the incident at Ocean and Navy Way.
