NYK inks agreement for green ammonia marine transport in Asia

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has signed an agreement on the marine shipment of green ammonia to Japan.

NYK revealed that they are doing this in collaboration with Kyushu Electric Power Company, Incorporated (Kyushu Electric), Sojitz Corporation (Sojitz), and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte. Ltd. (Sembcorp).

Takahiro Rokuroda, NYK’s General Manager of the Next Generation Fuel Business Group, attended the signing event in Delhi, India.

This project seeks to generate competitive green ammonia in India, which has an abundance of renewable energy resources.

In June, Kyushu Electric, Sojitz, and Sembcorp established a preliminary deal to provide green ammonia generated in this project to different industrial clients in Japan, especially in the Kyushu area.

The deal is founded on the concept that about 200,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia will be generated yearly through this project and carried to the Kyushu area to fulfil end-user demand, leveraging NYK’s experience and understanding of ammonia maritime transport.

In July, JERA Co., Inc. (JERA) accomplished the world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia to an ammonia-fueled tugboat (A-Tug) operated by NYK Line.
