NYK to complete first truck-to-ship fuel ammonia bunkering

The NYK Group has announced that it will supply fuel ammonia to an NYK-owned ammonia-fuelled tugboat scheduled to be completed in June.

On 10 April, an announcement ceremony was conducted at Sea Japan 2024, an international event attended by numerous marine industry professionals.

JERA, Resonac, and NYK signed an agreement in December 2023 to jointly study the supply of fuel ammonia to ships.

After reaching a safe and secure position for delivering fuel ammonia to ships, NYK has chosen to supply fuel to the soon-to-be-completed A-Tug at the Port of Yokohama via an ammonia lorry (tank truck) at the end of May.

If successful, this will be the first time a ship has been replenished with fuel ammonia via vehicle.

In February, Enaex S.A., a Chilean ammonium nitrate plant, and NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NBP), a part of the NYK Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to investigate the viability of delivering low-carbon ammonia to ammonia-fuelled ships.
