NYK's engine facility tests safety of new fuels in maritime

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has begun operating a test engine facility in Chiba Prefecture to assess the safety of new fuels.

According to NYK, the introduction of new marine fuels required testing and analysis at external engine facilities, as well as trial operations, which would take around two years to complete.

Shortening this duration and lowering the cost of testing have been critical to addressing the growing demand for novel fuels, such as biofuels, while also meeting various nations’ environmental regulatory requirements.

By using NYK’s own test engine to conduct stress testing, the company eliminates the requirement for trial operations and aims for practical usage within three months.

Utilising the engine operation and fuel-oil analysis technologies of NYK Group companies Boltech Co. Ltd. and Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co. Ltd. allows NYK to verify the potential of various new marine fuels and accelerate their practical application and commercialisation.

In August, NYK and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (IHI Power Systems) completed the ammonia-powered tugboat Sakigake in collaboration with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK).
