Penang Port acquires Kalmar container handlers

Penang Port Sdn Bhd (Penang Port) has announced a significant investment in a new fleet of Kalmar container handlers in an effort to optimise operations.

The new fleet comprises four Empty Container Handlers and one Reach Stacker.

The Empty Container Handlers will be deployed to handle empty containers, marking the first time Penang Port will fully insource this operation using its own manpower and equipment.

The Reach Stacker, equipped with a container weighing system, will be utilised for the first time in Penang Port’s container weighing operations.

“We are excited to introduce these new Kalmar container handlers to our fleet,” said Dato’ Sasedharan Vasudevan, Chief Executive Officer of Penang Port.

“This investment underscores our dedication to staying at the forefront of the industry and delivering efficient, reliable port services.”

Last September, the Penang Port Commission (PPC) joined the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) as a regular member.

More recently, Maher Terminals LLC installed the Kalmar Collision Warning System on 36 of its straddle carriers, with a further 68 machines to follow in 2024 and 2025.
