Port Houston witnesses 20 per cent container volume growth in August

Port Houston witnessed a 20 per cent TEU increase in August, hitting 367,653 TEU for the month.

Total container volumes during the first eight months of the year were 2.79 million TEU, representing an 11 per cent increase over the same time in 2023.

Port Houston’s Bayport Container Terminal now has 18 ship-to-shore (STS) electric cranes, including three new additions.

These cranes have been delivered to Wharves 6 and 2, increasing the facility’s capacity for anticipated expansion and helping to increase vessel productivity to assist ocean carrier clients.

Import TEU at Port Houston container ports jumped 9 per cent in August compared to 2023, owing to a strong retail market and consumer spending.

Year to date (YTD), loaded imports are up 9 per cent. On the export side, loaded containers increased 19 per cent in August and 13 per cent for the year, with resins continuing to drive these volumes.

Charlie Jenkins, CEO of Port Houston, said: “These volumes reflect the Port Houston team’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence. We are strategically investing in our facilities and will continue to adapt and innovate in response to market demands.”

In July, Port Houston recorded a 5 per cent decrease in container volume compared to the same month last year, handling 325,277 TEU.
