Port NOLA resumes operations as Hurricane Francine abates

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) and the New Orleans Public Belt (NOPB) have resumed operations following Hurricane Francine.

This comes after terminal operations and the port’s administration building stopped operating on 12 September.

The port noted that preliminary damage assessments revealed no serious damage to port facilities or infrastructure.

All four Port NOLA bridges on the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal (IHNC) resumed regular operations on 13 September, after canal evaluations and coordination by the Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP).

The port revealed that the following waterway limitations are still in effect:

  • The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) between the West Closure Complex and Mile Marker 20 West of Harvey Locks (WHL) is closed to all vessel traffic. The Algiers Canal to the West Closure Complex is open to vessel navigation.

  • The Inner Harbor Navigational Canal (IHNC) Lock is now closed due to reverse head conditions.

Capt. Gregory Callaghan, Commander, U.S. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, said: “Reopening the economically vital ports of South Louisiana is crucial for restoring the flow of commerce on the marine transportation system. As the gateway to America’s Heartland, these ports are essential for delivering supplies and maintaining the flow of goods across the region and globe.

“Despite challenges presented by Hurricane Francine, our team and our port industry partners worked tirelessly to restore the unrestricted and safe flow of commerce.”

In June, Port NOLA and NOPB announced that intermodal rail volumes are up more than 15 per cent year-to-date (YTD) when comparing January through May.
