The Port of Los Angeles has finished 2023 on a high note, processing 747,335 TEU in December 2023, 2.5 per cent higher than the previous year.
Overall, the Port of Angeles handled 8.63 million TEU in 2023, almost 13 per cent less than 2022.
Trade fell in most categories at ports globally, but the port remained the nation’s busiest for the 24th year in a row. December 2023 was reportedly the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year (YoY) gains for the port.

Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka, said: “In 2024, our sights are set on community investment, sustainability progress and capturing additional market share.
“To drive cargo, we’re investing in a 10-year, $2 billion capital improvement program. We’ll also focus on secure technology enhancements to improve efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint. All that leads to additional jobs and the port’s ability to re-invest more dollars back into our communities.”
The port’s loaded imports in December 2023 landed at 369,477 TEU, an increase of 5 per cent compared to the previous year. Loaded exports came in at 121,575 TEU, an increase of 26 per cent compared to 2022. Empty containers totalled 256,283 TEU, an 8.5 per cent decrease compared to last year.
In October 2023, cargo volume at the Port of Los Angeles climbed for the third month in a row compared to the previous year.
