Port of Oakland exports $8.5 billion worth of agricultural goods

The Port of Oakland has exported 235,899 TEUs of agricultural goods for a total of $8.5 billion in October 2024.

Among US ports, Oakland boasts the highest TEU volume in international refrigerated (reefer) export commerce.

Port of Oakland Maritime Director, Bryan Brandes, said: “The Port of Oakland is a major international gateway for California’s and the nation’s farmers. Agricultural exports are especially important commodities for our port’s business.

“In any given year, agricultural products comprise between 37 per cent and 45 per cent of total exports from Oakland.”

For seven years in a row, Oakland has led all US ports in international reefer export TEUs.

By 2023, the entire economic value of reefer exports through Oakland surpassed $7 billion. Over the past seven years, the port and its partners have made significant investments in agricultural and chilled product facilities.

These developments, which include Cool Port and PCC Logistics facilities, have cleared the path for significantly increased shipping of agricultural, refrigerated, and frozen items via the port.

In October, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Port of Oakland $322 million to accelerate the Oakland Seaport’s transition to nearly 100 per cent zero-emission cargo handling operations.
