Porto Itapoá handles 1 million TEUs in 10 months

Porto Itapoá has achieved a container volume record having handled 1 million TEUs in the first 10 months of 2024.

The previous record took 12 months to achieve, meaning the port surpassed its performance by 67 days.

This record is partly due to the completion of Phase III of the port’s expansion in the first half of 2024. As a result, Porto Itapoá increased the size of its yard to a capacity of 455,000 square metres (m²).

The new infrastructure enables them to store 31,000 TEUs and handle 1.8 million TEUs each year.

In addition, Phase IV is already underway so as to meet the increasing demand both domestically and internationally. The expansion will add a further 120,000 m² to the yard, as well as provide new high-tech machinery.

“This expansion shows that we remain committed to providing a more efficient service with a greater logistical capacity and establishes Porto Itapoá as a real giant in the port industry,” explained Ricardo Arten, the CEO of Porto Itapoá.

Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., the Director of Operations, Technology and Environment at Porto Itapoá, attributed this achievement to the modern and efficient infrastructure at the Terminal.

“This is the result of regular investment, which has allowed us to continuously improve our operations. For example, this Terminal now has the most container cranes in Santa Catarina. We have seven robust, technologically advanced machines, as well as the largest storage yard,” Rosa Jr. said.

Last month, Porto Itapoá successfully operated three ships at the same with the use of portainers.
