Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has broken the world record for building the largest continership after producing the first vessel over 20,000 TEU.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' (MOL) MOL Triumph (pictured) is 400 metres in length, has a width of 58.8 metres, and a depth of 32.8 metres, allowing it to transport 20,150 containers.
MOL Triumph will be delivered in March 27, 2017, to MOL after the last preparations are made for its maiden voyage.
MOL, the largest Japanese container shipping company, is currently ranked 12 by shipping analyst Alphaliner for the global capacity of its vessel fleet.
SHI held a naming ceremony for MOL Triumph in Geoje shipyard, located in South Korea, on March 15, 2017.
It is the first of four 20,150 TEU containerships ordered by MOL in February 2015.
The event saw 90 representatives witness the naming of MOL Triumph from both SHI and MOL, including SHI CEO Dae-Young Park and MOL CEO Junichiro Ikeda.
The ship boasts an array of energy-saving equipment designed by SHI including a propeller, rudder valve and stator.
SHI has been leading the market with operation-optimized hull design and record-breaking containership size and expects to deliver 10 more 20,000 TEU containerships this year.
