Shanghai Port smashes 40 million TEU mark

Chinese ports exceed 275 million TEUs

Chinese ports have handled 276.4 million TEUs from January to September of 2024, representing a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 7.6 per cent.

In October, the container throughput of Shanghai Port reached 4.15 million TEUs, a YoY increase of 3.8 per cent. The port has handled an impressive 43.25 million TEUs so far this year.

The container throughput of Ningbo Zhoushan Port was 3.31 million TEU this October, a YoY increase of 12.9 per cent.

In the first ten months of the year, the Port of Shenzhen had the largest margin of increase, having handled 27.7 million TEUs, a YoY increase of 14.9 per cent, while the Port of Xiamen was the only port to record a deficit having recorded a YoY decrease of 4.0 per cent, handling 7.4 million TEUs.

In terms of container freight rates, the average value of the Ningbo Containerized Freight Index (NCFI) was 1680.4 points in November 2024, a month-on-month decrease of 8.4 per cent and a YoY increase of 137.8 per cent.

Among the 21 routes, the freight index of 17 routes increased month-on-month, and the freight index of 4 routes fell month-on-month.

Last month, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. announced the delivery of China’s self-developed liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel container vessel in the port city of Dalian in northeast China.
