The global straddle carrier market is expected to reach 12,193 units by 2021 — growing at a CAGR of more than 4% over the forecast period for 2017-2021, according to a new report by technology research and advisory company Technavio.
This growth is expected to come from three emerging key trends of automated terminal adoption, demand for automation in port handling systems and an increase in new terminals with advanced features.
Major drivers for the global straddle carrier market include safety, improved consistency and predictability, and reduced environmental impact.
Another attractive benefit once automated stacking cranes (ASCs) are deployed is better space utilization due to the price of coastal land.
Siddharth Jaiswal, Lead Analyst at Technavio for automotive manufacturing research, said: “Ports in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia are using automation to quickly boost the productivity in ways that were not possible for traditional port operators.
“New terminals equipped with automated container terminals are cleaner, safer, and quieter than the conventional terminals, and they deliver containers much faster to truckers than the fully manned terminals”
